Cincinnati Hikes Bird Hike

Have you ever been hiking and wondered “What’s that bird?” Here’s your chance to start learning the birds you may see and hear locally. No experience is required, the only thing needed is an interest in birds. Please be aware that bird walks are different than hikes. We will walk slowly, looking and listening, with frequent stops as we attempt to get all eyes on the birds. Our goal is not to get to a destination, but to enjoy the journey. Your guide will be Kathi Hutton, a resident of the Cincinnati area for 35 years. Kathi started birding when she identified her first White-crowned Sparrow in her backyard in 1994. She currently has a Life List of 430 species in North America, 325 in Ohio, and over 500 species worldwide. Fernald Preserve is a fantastic winter birding destination. Well known for winter ducks, we will have the opportunity for raptors as well, including Red-tailed Hawk, American Kestrel, Northern Harrier, and even Bald Eagle and Rough-legged Hawk if we are lucky. We will spend a good portion of the morning at Lodge Pond using our binoculars and a spotting scope studying the up to 15 species of waterfowl expected for December. When we have had our fill of ducks and other water birds, we will warm up on a 1 mile hike along Shingle Trail looking for woodland species. I am planning on a three hour visit altogether.
